The Heart of Haiti

Sunday, January 09, 2011

Until last year, all I knew about Haiti was that it's attached to the Dominican Republic, which is my favourite place to go in the springtime to blow off some steam and achieve a state of non-pale. When the earthquake hit on January 12, 2010, killing an estimated 230,000 people and impacting roughly 3 million others, the devastation was shocking. It quickly became apparent that the people of this country are wonderfully resilient and creative, working with fairly limited means for the past year to restore their homes and attempting to restore a state of existence that somewhat resembles their lives before the disaster.

One such project is the Heart of Haiti initiative. Working with materials such as recycled oil drums, iron and stone, artisans in Haiti create beautiful, unique pieces which are sold at Macy's. They receive 22% of the retail price for each of their pieces sold.

Go here to browse the items (my favourite is the Heart of Haiti Colonial Tray. Purchasing from this collection is a great way to support the restoration of Haiti, particularly if you're someone who, like me, would love to help but has been unsure of how to do so.

I was selected for this very special “CleverHaiti” opportunity by Clever Girls Collective, which endorses Blog With Integrity. All opinions are my own.
