Grade 9 Mixtape

Friday, March 09, 2012

In middle school and the early years of high school, before things like burning CDs (kids today are like "why would they burn CDs? Are CDs even flammable? What's a CD?") I was the queen of mixtapes. This is how my evenings would go during the week: get home from school, eat dinner, watch Seinfeld, and go to my room to do homework and listen to the radio with a blank tape ready to go. I'd record every song that came on that I liked and carefully label the tape case so I wouldn't get them mixed up. You don't want to grab the Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men tape when you're in a Nirvana mood!

I'd listen to that puppy in my Walkman all weekend long. My family used to take long Sunday afternoon drives and rather than subjecting myself to whatever shitty country or easy listening travesty they were jamming to I'd stick with my Walkman, at least until the batteries started to drag. Oh my God, this is making me feel so old.

Earlier today on the twitters, we were talking about songs that we used to enjoy. I started thinking about a particular mixtape of mine from around Grade 9.

It included gems such as...

Wonderwall - I still get excited when they play this at the Alehouse.
Standing Outside A Broken Phonebooth With Money In My Hand - I have never heard of the Primitive Radio Gods since but I sure loved this song at the time.
Santa Monica - I was pretty obsessed with this one. I probably did a fist-pump when I hit record on that bad boy. Or whatever the 1996 version of a fist-pump was.
Only Wanna Be With You - my grade 9 boyfriend allegedly requested this song for me on the radio (although I never heard it) and then dumped me on Easter weekend. WAH.
Lightning Crashes - nothing like a good cafeteria slow dance to a song about birthing babies and old people dying.
Champagne Supernova - there was a lot of Oasis in those days!
California Love - Out on bail, fresh outta jail, California dreamin'! Soon as I step on the scene I'm hearin' hootchie screamin'! Tupac knew how to say it with style.
No Diggity - Another school dance gem. Play on, playette.

Hoooo doggies, mama's feeling aged now. Time to go put on my Adidas track pants and Esprit t-shirt and drink some Crystal Pepsi and maybe eat some McDonald's pizza because I AM A 90'S DINOSAUR.

    1. Me too! I used to get them a lot. They still had them when I started working there which would have been 1997 but they stopped making them shortly after.

    1. I love that channel too! We had a rental car with Sirius on vacation once and I kept listening to the 90s channel. Peter haaaates it. I was like, it's either this or gangsta rap!

  5. I sucked at catching songs on the radio. I'd either start recording to soon or stopping to early. But I sure did love my mixed tapes!
