We're officially into deep fall, y'all. We had a delicious Thanksgiving, I've been cowering under the blanket pretending to watch some scary movies, we went apple picking and visited a pumpkin patch and navigated a corn maze, so we're checking off all the fall essentials. It's also getting really dark and really cold. Staying up past 9pm is a struggle, getting out of bed in the dark is a struggle...bears have the right idea with the whole hibernation thing.
In honour of what is undoubtedly the best season of the year, I decided to round up some of my recent favourite things and share them with you.

1. Spicy Hot Chocolate - It's officially hot chocolate season and I've been looking for a healthier alternative to the (delicious and wonderful) super-sweet sugarbomb packaged hot chocolate. Enter Joyous Health's recipe for spicy hot chocolate. I made it with almond milk instead of hemp milk, because that's what I had on hand. For one serving, just use 1 cup of milk of your choice, a heaping tablespoon of cocoa powder, 1/2 tablespoon of maple syrup, three shakes of cinnamon and one shake of cayenne. It's surprisingly chocolatey and satisfying and it's got some zip. Plus, no weird stuff!
2. The Scream series on Netflix - Peter is big into watching scary movies in October but I have trouble staying awake for an entire movie (see above note re: hibernation mode). Solution? The Scream series is actually scary and the episodes are a totally manageable length. No forcing yourself to stay awake for two hours so you can see if the kids make it out of the hillbilly cabin in the woods.
3. Joe Fresh blanket scarves - I love Joe Fresh, because what's more convenient than being able to buy a new dress for yourself and a snowsuit and boots for your kid when you go for groceries? (Insert stack of bills with wings emoji here). I picked up one of their blanket scarves for fall and have been using it as a scarf, a vest, an actual blanket...it's really big.
4. Illume Woodfire candle - Confession time: our fireplace is electric. And while it emits a cozy glow and some welcomed warmth in our living room, it's just not the same as a legit woodburning fireplace. Enter this candle, which, as you may have been able to decipher from the name, smells just like a woodsy fire. With this baby lit, if you kind of squint at the "flames", you can almost imagine it's a real fire. You can order them online but I picked mine up at Chapters.
5. Luckiest Girl Alive - I've had this book on hold at the library for a million years and finally got it into my hot little mitts just in time to curl up with under a nice warm blanket (scarf?). It's been touted as "the next Gone Girl!" which, sorry, wishful thinking, BUT it's a nice, dark, twisted little story, which is the best kind.
So that's what I'm into lately. Make yourself a spicy hot chocolate, light a candle, wrap yourself up in a scarf/vest/coat/blanket hybrid and enjoy watching teenagers get murdered and reading about a woman who likes to get slapped across the face during sex. This is what fall's all about, guys!
